Victorian classicists often linked the downfall of Rome with the "degeneracy" of queer public life, and often named the Cult of the Great Mother and spat their horror at self castrated trans women. Meanwhile, the Gallae baptised themselves in the blood of a sacrificed bull and cared for each other as children following this rebirth. All speculation about this community of trans women loving each other sexually as well as spiritually is my own based on *ahem* experience in modern trans femme communities.
